In January 1996, ten United Methodist Churches in South Minneapolis commited to work together for the shalom - peace, health, and wholeness - of the city. Our goals were to form working relationships among the Shalom Community churches, enhancing the vitality of our congregations, and to foster cooperative efforts to address the needs of the central city, helping us minister effectively as servants of God's shalom.
Eleven years later, ten congregations are thirteen, in north as well as South Minneapolis. We are: Prospect Park, Epworth, Minnehaha, Edgewater Emmanuel, Oakland Avenue, Walker, Simpson, Joyce, Wesley, Asbury, Hennepin Avenue, North, and Trinity. Other congregations or their pastors join us from time to time and are part of our community; Riverview, and others. Our churches share a vision of reaching out to the city. Each has gifts that enrich our common spiritual life, our sense of community, our passion for social justice, and our ethnic and lifestyle diversity. |
